ABOUT
My name is Alan Duncan Hamilton. I’m a Screenwriter and TV Show Creator based in London. I’ve been a writer in one way or another for most of my life. And have spent my time learning how much of that time learning and refining the process of telling stories, and helping others – whether professionally or personally – do the same.
When it comes to telling those stories on TV and Film, I’ve studied the best: everyone from Alexander Mackendrick to Keith Johnstone, Michael Hauge to Joseph Campbell, with a good bit of Kurt Vonnegut thrown in for good measure.
What are the keys to producing a good script? Well, as Mackendrick says: Structure, Structure, Structure. Though, strong characters with believable arcs who deliver interesting dialogue is also essential. Tension & emotion, action & movement, themes, subtext & symbolism, all play their part.
When I read your Treatment, Pitch, TV or Film Script those are the elements I’m thinking about as I tease out any problems and suggest solutions.
Ultimately, after you’ve digested my advice – and perhaps ignored it! – I want you to go away and be confident about your script. Know what (if any) rewrites and changes need to be made. And be confident that you have the tools to start the process of getting your Film or TV Series or Short commissioned, funded and made.
Professionally, I spent 10 years working for Discovery Warner. For the past seven I’ve working in Development – coming up with TV Show and Documentary ideas and crafting them for pitching and commissioning. Alongside that I was Screenwriter on the documentary The Footsteps of Tagore, and have two further documentary features coming out in 2023. Finally, I am currently in pre-production on a Short with Hellfire! Productions and continue to pitch Films and Series.
Scripts I’ve written have gone across the desks of commissioners and producers at ScottFree, Netflix, Apple TV+ and Red Wagon. Have been read by everyone from Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hardy, Jordan Vogt-Roberts and George Clooney. And I’ve pitched projects to BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, ITV, History Channel, Discovery Networks, National Geographic, UKTV, A+E Networks, Amazon and Sky.
